A LITTLE STORY ABOUT VALENTINE'S DAY

or Valentine's Day is a holiday on February 14. It is the traditional day on which lovers express their love for each other; sending Valentine's cards or candy. It is very common to present flowers on Valentine's Day. The holiday is named after two men, both Christian martyrs among the numerous Early Christian martyrs named Valentine. The day became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished.

…Valentine’s Day is the second largest card sending holiday of the year, second only to Christmas?

…Women purchase about 85% of Valentine’s?

…Valentine’s Day is also celebrated in Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Italy, France, and Australia?

…In February 2004, $2.4 billion worth of jewelry was purchased?

While some things can be known about the origins of Valentine’s Day, one thing we don’t know for sure is just where or when we began celebrating amore, although there have been many stories told over the years.

London Fashion Week: Fun or folly?

London Fashion Week: Fun or folly?

London is living up to its reputation as a centre for daring but wearable design, often bordering on the bizarre at the start of its fashion week.

With around 30 designers set to make their debut at the event, alongside established names such as Nicole Farhi, John Rocha and Betty Jackson.

But some complain that London Fashion Week isn't just about designers pushing the boundaries of creativity, but rather a crude marketing ploy in order in grab headlines and publicity.

Is designer fashion just too outrageous for the British public? Or should fashion be fun and frivolous?

Skinny models

One of Spain's most prestigious fashion shows has agreed to ban overly skinny models from taking part. The organisers of Madrid Fashion Week are using the Body Mass Index - a calculation based on height and weight - to reject models that are too thin. This report from Danny Wood: The Spanish fashion industry is taking a stand against waif thin models. Madrid Fashion Week may not be equal to the catwalks of Paris or New York, but organisers are turning away women they say are too underweight. Last year's fashion parade led to protests from medical associations and women's rights groups, who complained that the participants were unhealthily skinny.

Smart fabrics are back in fashion

The Italian town of Prato has been built on cloth.
There is even a museum there dedicated to its history, so there is no better place to weave together traditional Italian know-how with digital technology and come up with the next generation of cloth, what they are calling "smart fabric".

A company called Luminex has hit on the idea of weaving fibre-optics into fabric, so the wearer can really light up a room when they enter it.
Luminex's Cristiano Peruzzi says: "It is a fabric containing, amongst other things, fibre-optics, but there is also a technical side to it.
"The system consists of cabling, and the fibre-optics are lit by high-efficiency LEDs. The system powering it varies according to the function."

Iran police move into fashion business

Women in high-heeled shoes and plenty of make-up strut down the catwalk amid clouds of artificial smoke.

It is the first time live models have been allowed to appear in a fashion show in post-revolutionary Iran.

The only unusual aspect is that they are all wearing Islamic dress; including some draped from head to toe in the all enveloping chador.

It's part of a new drive to give women more attractive choices of Islamic dress that allow them to express their individuality, while remaining within the letter of the law.

Not everyone in the all female audience was happy.

"I don't think ordinary people will like this show because everything comes from Arab culture," complains Faranak who says she wants something more Iranian and indigenous.

Her friend agrees: "Here we didn't see anything interesting - in terms of colours and designs we have much better stuff; just look on the streets of Tehran they're wearing much better clothes".

'Western dolls'

Many of the women on the streets of Tehran do indeed look more like Western fashion models than the models on the catwalk.
